Here are some of the obvious benefits of the Discovery Credit Card:
Discovery Membership Card
You Discovery Credit Card also acts as you Discovery membership card (or Discovery Medical Aid card) all in one.
This is cool because you no longer have to carry around 2 cards.
Partner Store Cash Back
You get discounts (acting as cash-backs) from certain stores.
Depending on your membership level (i.e.: Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum) you get a percentage of your purchase deposited back onto your credit card, ranging from 8% to 20%.
Example stores that participate:
- Nandos
- Pick ‘n Pay
- Reggies toy store
- Stuttafords
- Exclusive Books
Travel Discounts
Not only do you get discounts when you shop, but you can also get up to 22% discount on international travel, depending on your status. AND, on top of that, if you have Discovery Miles, you can use those to get further discounts on your travel.
Home Loan Discounts
If you migrate your home loan over to First National Bank, you can get up to 10% of your monthly payments deposited back onto your Credit Card.
Motor DiscoveryCard
You can have a Garage Card linked to your DiscoveryCard, and this card has it’s own benefits:
- Flat tyre. International SOS will arrange to have the spare tyre put on the car<\li>
- Flat battery. International SOS will help you get the vehicle started, if possible<\li>
- You lock your keys in the car. International SOS will pay for a locksmith to retrieve the keys<\li>
- You run out of fuel. International SOS will come to your rescue, but you’ll pay the cost of the fuel.<\li>
Other DiscoveryCard Benefits
If you can think of any other benefits that I’ve missed, feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of this page.

I would like to apply for a discovery credit card. How do I go about doing this?
Please let me know who your discovery miles works if I want to go to Ireland next year.
Hi Kreeshni. Take a look at this article for more info:
DiscoveryCard Application
And don’t forget to subscribe to this site (top right hand side) to receive more info by mail.
And unlike the DiscoveryCard, it’s free of charge.
I would like to know if the type of card you receive, is based on your vitality status or your income status?
The type of card you receive is mostly based on your income. Though I believe to get the Platinum Discovery Card you may need a certain status as well. Have to double check that.
I am interested in applying for a credit card, but would like to know if the credit card comes with a “petrol card” as with the bank’s credit card?
There is a Petrol Card option available. It does cost extra though.
Just remember, soon you won’t need a petrol card because the government is changing the way things work and you will soon be able to buy petrol on your credit card. I just wonder if it will also be counter as a free transaction.
Thanks for the quick response James. Do you maybe know what the extra cost is for the petrol card?
It looks like the current price for a Motor Card is R110 per year.
Hi James
To obtain the benefits of using my card…can I just swipe my card for my purchases and pay in cash? How do I activate the voyager miles benefit?
I believe the points are calculated based on the amount you spend on the Discovery Card, so if you’re paying cash, you won’t be getting the points.
So, no, you won’t be able to just swipe your card and pay in cash unfortunately. Though, if you do what I do, you could just put cash onto your card at the beginning of the month, and use the card instead of drawing cash from the ATM.
To activate your Discovery Miles, I think you can just log onto the Discovery website and activate under the “Card” section.
I would like to receive more information about discovery credit card,
I applied for a discovery card. It was approved but I never received it
That’s pretty much what happened to me.
Who have you phoned about it? Chances are Discovery will blame the delivery company…
If i swipe my card so i get “money back” With pick n pay you get real cash back, Are the discovery “miles” real cash
I guess the Discovery Miles are real cash in that you can actually BUY goods with them. I think they work out to about 10c per Mile.
Can i make deposits on discovery credit card just like a savings to use when my medical savings account is used up to reach the Anual threshold limit.
Hmmm… I’m not sure. You can definitely deposit money onto your card. That’s how I use it. I try to put money on the card at the beginning of the month, and only use what I deposit there.
Whether it’s a simple case of using that “cash” when you reach your annual threshold, I don’t see why not. It would be the same if you went to the ATM and just drew the cash.
Or am I misunderstanding you?
How and when do you receive the percentage urned on purchaces made from pick n pay…? Is it credited onto your card monthly perhaps?
Yes, it’s credited back onto your card once a month.
I think around the 15th. And you should receive an SMS when you get the credit into your account saying how much. Though it’s not broken down between the various suppliers (like Pick n Pay, etc..)
Do I receive any benefit when purchasing movie tiskets ?
Can my husband & I both have cards on one account?
Thanks
You won’t receive any discounts when purchasing tickets with the credit card, but you can apply for the Vitality Movie card and get discounts with that. (WELL worth it).
I’m not 100% sure about having 2 cards. I recommend phoning 0860 11 CARD (2273) to get confirmation on this.
Currently I do not have a medical aid as I prefer paying for things myself.
I have a growing fund currently standing at +- R 300 000 as a back up for medical.
I do have Life and Disability cover with Discovery. The thing that concerns me most is if I am ever in an accident and am not concious, emergency medical personal go through your purse or wallet to establish if you are on a medical aid. If they find a medical aid card, they will then take you to the nearest private , decent hospital. If they do not find this info on your person, you will be delivered, at your peril to the doorsteps of a provincial hospital. The “golden hour” could mean life or death, depending where you land up. My question then is : Will having a Discover Credit Card in your purse or wallet solve this problem????
Well, I guess it all depends. If the Discovery Card has your medical aid details on it, then yes, it would make a difference.
I think the hospitals are still only going to show you a preference if they think you have medical aid, and the Discovery Credit Card would be treated the same as a normal credit card unless it was actually part of a medical aid membership.
Hi ,
Can I pay at the tollgate and car service with a Discovery Motor Card?
Yes you can. I do all the time.
